SPARKS, Md. -- Continuing to haul in national plaudits for her work with the Christopher Newport women's lacrosse program, Kelsey Winters picked up right where she left off last season after securing second-team Preseason All-American honors from USA Lacrosse Magazine ahead of the 2022 campaign.
 
With the award, Winters becomes the first Captain in program history to earn Preseason All-American accolades. Overall, she was one of 39 student-athletes from around the nation to receive the recognition from USA Lacrosse Magazine this year.
 
Winters was previously celebrated as a third-team All-American by the publication at the end of the 2021 campaign. She also hauled in second-team nods from the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association for her work during her sophomore season.
 
In just two years with the Captains, Winters has amassed an impressive collection of awards for her work on the turf. Along with her national honors, she is also a two-time first-team All-State performer and was named the Virginia Rookie of the Year in 2020. Additionally, she secured first-team All-Conference and All-State nods last season.
 
During the 2021 campaign, Winters ranked ninth in the NCAA with 47 assists. That total also placed her second on the school's all-time single-season charts. One of the nation's leading playmakers, she also landed 30 goals and ranked third in the conference with 77 total points and 11 free-position strikes.
 
Tormenting the opposition on a consistent basis, she already owns three of the program's top-six single-game assist marks. Meanwhile, her 11-point showcase against Virginia Wesleyan on March 10, 2021 stands as the third-highest total in school history. Incredibly, Winters has at least two points in each of her 21 appearances over the past two years.
 
Already making her mark on the history books, the Harwood, Maryland native ranks 10th in program lore with 70 career assists. Her 15 free-position goals also place her 12th on the school's all-time list.
 
Equally respected off the field, Winters was named a team captain for the upcoming season.
 
During the 2021 campaign, Winters helped guide Christopher Newport to an 11-7 record while defeating four nationally-ranked opponents. The Captains were mainstays in the national coaches poll throughout the year and eventually finished the season slotted 22nd in the IWLCA rankings.
