The Captains most recently played Averett University last Saturday at the Freeman Center, recording a 76-54 victory. CNU improved to 5-0 at home this season with the win over the Cougars, and the Captains were led by sophomore
Trey Barber, who scored 19 points, pulled down eight rebounds, and blocked three shots. Barber leads the Captains in all three categories for the season, topping the squad in scoring (13.4), rebounding (7.1) and blocks (5.0). Fifth-year senior
Jason Aigner tallied ten points vs. Averett to give him 1,188 in 99 career games in a CNU uniform. He is just 13 points shy of Terry Gray for 21st on the all-time scoring list as he heads into his 100th game as a Captain on Sunday.
John Krikorian's squad is riding a three-game winning streak since losing to the Hornets at Lynchburg on November 21st by an 83-66 final score. Christopher Newport never held the lead in the first meeting and made just eight of 30 shots in the opening half, allowing the Hornets to build a 39-24 halftime lead. CNU cut the deficit to 11 with nine minutes to go in the second half, 60-49, but the Hornets responded with a 12-0 run to put the game away. The Captains were victimized by 16 turnovers and shot just 41 percent from the field (24 of 59) in the first battle.
Meanwhile, the Hornets decisive victory over the Captains last month marked the start of a four-game winning streak for Lynchburg. Hilliary Scott's team is 5-1 heading into a Saturday afternoon game at Salisbury University prior to coming to Newport News for Sunday's action. Lynchburg's most recent game was also last Saturday, a 91-74 triumph over Bridgewater in Lynchburg.
Sunday's tilt will be the 24th in the all-time series, and Lynchburg holds a 14-9 lead. The matinee will follow the Christopher Newport/Marymount women's game, which is set to start at 2:00 p.m. Tickets for the games will be available at the Freeman Center ticket office.
