KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The United Soccer Coaches announced the 2021 Division III Men's Soccer All-Region teams this week, listing a pair of Christopher Newport Captains among those honored in their senior season. Defender
Davis Pillow earned second team All-Region accolades for his first career recognition and forward
Will Collins was a third team selection for his second career certificate.
The pair of selections marks the sixth time in the last seven seasons that Christopher Newport has earned multiple All-Region honors. Pillow extends a run of impressive defensive players to garner recognition as the sixth center back since 2014 to be named an All-Region player for the Captains. Collins becomes the 24th different player in program history to earn multiple All-Region nods in his career.Â
The nationally-ranked Captains won the 2021 Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Championship and advance to the second weekend of NCAA Tournament action. Led by Pillow and Collins on either end of the field, CNU finished the 2021 campaign with a 12-5-2 overall record.Â
Named the C2C Defensive Player of the Year, Pillow has been as consistent a presence in the CNU lineup as any other player in program history. He started 72 of the 74 games played in his career and finished his career just shy of 6,000 minutes played to rank fifth-most in program history. The Captains' leader on the back line finished with 22 career points on eight goals and six assists.
While adding a dynamic option on the offensive end for corner kicks and other set pieces, Pillow's natural skillset was on defense where he helped CNU log 27 shutouts with a goals-against average of 0.886 over the four years he was a starter. This season, CNU notched six clean sheets with a GAA of 1.07 for the season. Opponents were held to just 8.7 shots per game with Pillow consistently marking the opposing team's top offensive weapon.Â
While his team captain locked down the back end, Collins put together a strong offensive season to lead the way for Christopher Newport on the other side of the field. He scored 18 points on seven goals and four assists including a pair of game-winning goals. In NCAA Tournament play, Collins scored three goals and added an assist to lead the team to three wins in postseason action. During the regular season, Collins had an impressive five game stretch with four goals and two assists to lift the Captains back into the national rankings.Â
The senior forward started 43 games and played 54 total in his three years with the Captains. He has 34 career points with 13 goals scored and eight assists.Â
Christopher Newport, ranked No. 24 in the final regular season poll, advanced to the Round of 16 in the 2021 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship before suffering a 3-2 defeat at the hands of No. 1 Washington & Lee University. In two seasons under Conference Coach of the Year
Justin Chezem, the Captains are 26-7-7 for an overall winning percentage of 72%.Â
