Christopher Newport enters the weekend winners of five straight and nine of the last ten to improve their overall record to 12-4-2 on the season. The Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Champions earned a 3-0 win over Eastern Connecticut State in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament before dispatching of Rowan University on their home field in the second round.

During the Captains' big run at the end of the season, the offense has scored multiple goals in eight of ten games and is led by senior Will Collins with 16 points on six goals and four assists. Senior Cory Hogge has added a 10-point season thus far with three goals and four assists while junior Chris Schram has added nine points on four goals and one helper.

While the offense has been firing on all cylinders, the defensive unit continues to be tough to score upon, holding opponents to one goal or fewer in eight of the last ten contests. Senior team captains Davis Pillow and Daniel Hulett lead the center of the back line while junior Jacob Dudley and sophomore Jonathon Leiding have each started all 18 games on the outside.

Washington and Lee counters with one of the top units in the country as the Generals have been ranked No. 1 in the nation ever since the week they defeated the Captains in the regular season, 2-1. Randolph College ended a 16-game unbeaten streak to start the season when they won over the Generals in overtime during the ODAC Tournament semifinals. Despite the setback, W&L rebounded for a 6-1 win against Baruch in the first round and a 2-1 victory against Covenant in the second.

The Generals own a 4-2-1 advantage in the all-time series which dates back to the 1997 season. This will be the second time the two teams have faced off in the NCAA Tournament after Christopher Newport earned a 1-0 win over W&L in the 2000 version of the postseason event.
