No. 4 CNU Women's Soccer Returns to Action Wednesday at Salisbury

SALISBURY, Md. -- Putting their perfect record on the line at Salisbury University, the fourth-ranked Christopher Newport women's soccer team will travel to Maryland for a Wednesday afternoon matchup against the Sea Gulls. The Captains (9-0-0) will take on Salisbury (4-5-2) at 4:00 pm with live stats and a live video webcast available online.

The United Soccer Coaches National Rankings and the D3soccer.com top 25 poll were both released on Tuesday with no movement at the top of the poll. Christopher Newport still checks in at No. 4 nationally in the former and No. 2 in the D3soccer.com rankings.

Under the direction of first-year head coach Jamie Gunderson, the Christopher Newport women's soccer team has raced out to the finest start in program history with nine straight victories besting the previous mark of eight straight in 2000. CNU remains one of only eight teams left in the nation that are undefeated in 2021.

Leading the way last week were conference players of the week Riley Cook and Haley Eiser. Cook leads the team in scoring with 18 points on eight goals and two assists, including an impressive 11 points in two games last week. Eiser continues to climb the all-time charts at CNU with a perfect 8-0-0 record this year and five shutouts.

Joining Cook at the top of the Captains' dominant attack is Sarah Smith, scoring nine points on four goals and an assist so far this year. Molly Beegle has added three goals and an assist for seven points and newcomer Emma Ricci has scored two goals with two helpers for a six-point start to her CNU career.

Defensively, the Christopher Newport back line is holding opponents to just 5.4 shots per game including just 2.2 on-goal. Led by juniors Jill McDonald and Sarah Rhiel, the starting defense has also included rookie Re Slater and sophomore Nyah Savage for all nine games this season.

Salisbury will counter the Captains' well-rounded squad with an offense averaging 1.45 goals per game this season. Junior Autumn Dougherty leads the charge with 12 points on five goals and two assists while rookie Zakiyyah McMillan has added three goals and an assist in her first ten games played. In goal, a pair of senior Sea Gulls have split starting time this season with Emma Hill managing the bulk of the workload in eight starts with a 1.28 goals-against average.

For fans unable to attend in person, the SU Department of Athletics will provide live stats and a live video webcast. Links to both can be found on the women's soccer schedule at CNUsports.com.

Following Wednesday's matchup against the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference foe, the Captains will then travel to Mary Washington on Saturday, October 16 for the first of two bouts against the Eagles.
