Christopher Newport Volleyball Splits First Day of CNU Invitational

The Christopher Newport Volleyball team split their first two matches of this weekend's CNU Invitational. The Captains avenged an early-season loss with a win over Virginia Wesleyan, but dropped the second match to Salisbury.

Christopher Newport 3, Virginia Wesleyan 1 | (36-34, 20-25, 28-26, 25-21)

First Set

The match's opening set was indicative of how the rest of the match would go. Neither team was going to go down easy with the score going well past the usual 25. Maddie Carter stayed consistent throughout the set with eight kills, including the final two. A long back-and-forth was finally capped off with back-to-back kills by the senior Carter as the Captains took a long and important first set.

Second Set

The Captain's attack was stifled in the second set as Virginia Wesleyan led the entire time. The Marlins took advantage of some CNU errors as they built up a seven-point lead. Kyla McIntyre was a bright spot for the Captains with four kills, but it wasn't enough to hold off the Marlins who evened the match score at 1-1.

Third Set

Virginia Wesleyan jumped out to an early lead again in the third set, but this time, the Captains weathered the storm and quickly turned things around and finished with their best single-set hitting percentage of the match (.436). McIntyre and Mackenzie Wright each hit five kills as CNU scored six of the last eight points in the set to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

Fourth Set

It was a set of runs from the beginning as CNU immediately jumped out to a 3-0 lead. The Marlins and Captains traded runs, but 5-0 and 5-1 runs for CNU helped them maintain a slim lead. A kill from Wright put the Captains up 20-18, but back to back errors tied the score. A kill from Noelle Starr and an ace from Rebecca Frey put CNU up two again, and after a VWU kill, Macy Burk hit back-to-back kills before Starr finished off the set match with another kill.

Salisbury 3, Christopher Newport 1 | (20-25, 25-17, 25-20, 25-22)

First Set

The Captains took the match's first set thanks to a 5-0 run midway through the set. The teams were dead even through most of the set, but a Salisbury service error started a 5-0 run for CNU that included kills from Sammy Carroll and Macy Burk. In a five point victory, that run proved to be the difference as Sammy Carroll's service ace clinched the set for CNU.

Second Set

Salisbury took control in the second set quickly scoring 10 of the first 14 points. The SeaGulls hit .258 in the set, the best single-set total for either side in the match. CNU was never able to put up much resistance, as Salisbury evened the match score with a 25-17 set win.

Third Set

Again, it was Salisbury who took control of the set early scoring 10 of the set's first 14. They held a 10 point lead until the Captains managed to put a run of their own together. Led by Kyla McIntyre who had five kills in the set, the Captains cut Salisbury's lead in half to from 22-12 to 22-17. But the comeback fell short as Salisbury managed to put a stop to CNU's run and take the third set.

Fourth Set

Christopher Newport flipped the script in the fourth set and established a three-point lead. Unfortunately, that lead evaporated as Salisbury capitalized on a few errors to take the lead back. Macy Burk's kill later gave CNU a 22-21 lead, but the SeaGulls managed to score four points in a row to take the set and match.
