Captains Volleyball Downs Marymount in Five-Set Senior Day Win

In a hard-fought, five-set match, it was only fitting for Christopher Newport's seniors to rise to the occasion and lead the Captains to victory on Senior Day. Mackenzie Wright led the team with a career-high 17 kills and three blocks while Maddie Carter added 13 kills and two blocks as the team's second leading scorer.

First Set (Captains 25-21)

After Christopher Newport took the first three points of the match, Marymount scored 14 of the next 20 as they opened up a 14-6 lead. It looked like the Saints would take the first set, but the Captains rallied behind Mackenzie Wright and Kyla McIntyre, who each hit three kills in the stretch, and put together a 11-5 run to tie the set at 19. From there, CNU continued to build momentum from the comeback and scored seven of the next nine points, including Mackenzie Wright's fifth kill of the set that clinched it for the Captains.

Second Set (Saints 28-26)

Marymount again used an early surge to build a 14-6 lead in the second set. But again, the Captains responded with a 7-1 run to bring them within two. CNU continued to chip away and finally brought the score even at 21. The two sides stayed even past 25 points, and the Captains looked to take the second set leading 26-25, but three straight missed attacks gave the set to Marymount.

Third Set (Captains 25-21)

The Captains separated themselves from the Saints with an 8-2 run and led 16-9 midway through the third set, but Marymount quickly responded to tie the set at 16. The Captains maintained composure, and a Marymount service error started a run that saw CNU capitalize on several errors to score nine of the next 14 points and take the third set.

Fourth Set (Saints 25-19)

Maddie Carter led the Captains with four kills in the fourth set, but neither side was able to pull away from the other. Carter knotted up the score at 18 each, but the Saints rounded out their attack and started to pull ahead. Marymount took seven of the next eight points to force a deciding fifth set.

Fifth Set (Captains 15-11)

Like the rest of the match, the fifth set was close until the very end. With the set tied at 8, the Captains' balanced attack saw kills from six different players during a 7-3 run to take the set and match. Mackenzie Wright drove home the final kill of the match, her 17th of the afternoon, as CNU wrapped up a senior day win.
