Christopher Newport Sweeps Lynchburg in Midweek Win

The Captains took down Lynchburg in a three-set sweep on Tuesday night to improve to 18-8 on the season. Sammy Carroll helped CNU in all facets with 38 assists, four service aces, and three blocks.

First Set (Captains 25-17)

The Captains hit the ground running in the match with a balanced attack. The first five CNU kills came from different attackers, a trend that continued through the set. The Captains maintained their lead as Mackenzie Wright registered her fifth kill of the set to return the serve to CNU, leading 22-17. Sammy Carroll aced back-to-back serves before setting up Kyla McIntyre for the set-clinching kill.

Second Set (Captains 25-20)

The second set started out much closer than the first with the two sides all square at 9-9. An attacking error by the Hornets gave Sammy Carroll the serve, and once again, the junior served up two aces as part of a 5-0 run. That run turned out to be the difference in a close set. Kyla McIntyre's fourth kill of the set put the Captains up 24-20, and Noelle Starr's service ace wrapped up the second set for CNU.

Third Set (Captains 25-21)

The Hornets jumped out to a lead early in the third set, but the Captains quickly countered. Trailing 5-3, Christopher Newport scored nine of the next ten points to completely change the momentum of the set. Lynchburg managed to fight back and even the score at 18, but kills from Maddie Carter and Macy Burk helped CNU quickly regain the lead. The Captains moved closer to closing out the match when that duo teamed up for a block. Mackenzie Wright did the same to put CNU ahead 22-19. Two attacking errors and another kill from Carter helped the Captains take the third set and the match.

News & Notes

  • The Captains made just one reception error in the match, something they've done in one other match this season (09/28 vs. Mary Washington).
  • CNU held Lynchburg to just 20 kills, the second lowest total allowed this season by the Captains.
  • Maddie Carter led the Captains with 12 kills. She's been the team leader in six of the last seven matches.
