NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - For the third time this season, Christopher Newport University sophomore quarterback Matt Dzierski has been honored by the New Jersey Athletic Conference. Dzierski, from Lorton, Va., was selected the league's Offensive Player of the Week of Sunday.

Dzierski made his eighth straight start at quarterback and led the Captains to a 21-14 victory on Saturday at the College of New Jersey in Ewing, N.J. He had a hand in all three scores, throwing for two touchdowns and running for one, and engineered a fourth quarter drive that led to his game-winning score as the Captains evened their record at 4-4 overall and 2-2 in the NJAC.

Dzierski threw for two first quarter scores, connecting with senior tight end Brandon Johnson and fifth-year senior receiver Garrison Mayo. Later, with the game tied at 14-14 in the fourth quarter, he led the Captains on a 61-yard drive that culminated with Dzierski diving into the end zone for what proved to be the game-winning touchdown with 4:18 to play. 

The South County High School product finished the day 15 of 25 passing for 176 yards, and also topped the team in rushing with 59 yards on 15 carries. He has now thrown 13 touchdown passes and run for seven scores in eight games played, and is averaging 228.6 yards passing per game. Dzierski has completed 66.8 percent of his passes this season, and last week was ranked 15th in the country in completion percentage.

Christopher Newport will host Salisbury University at Kelchner Field at TowneBank Stadium this Saturday, October 30, in the final home game of the 2021 season. The Sea Gulls are 5-1 overall and 3-0 atop the NJAC standings. Saturday's game will feature a pre-game ceremony celebrating CNU's seniors, and Homecoming Weekend festivities at halftime.
