Captains Drop Saturday Match to Top-Ranked Johns Hopkins

Christopher Newport Volleyball took the match's first set over Johns Hopkins, but the Blue Jays won the next three sets to topple the Captains 3-1 on Saturday afternoon.

First Set (Captains 25-22)

The Captains got off to a hot start and surged to a 11-4 lead. Maddie Carter started the match with five kills in the first set and helped CNU fend off a few Johns Hopkins runs. Christopher Newport never lost the lead, but the Blue Jays got within a point when they cut CNU's lead to 21-20. Hopkins' fourth service error of the set helped CNU stay ahead, and Rebecca Frey would capitalize with a set-winning ace a few points later.

Second Set (Blue Jays 25-19)

Christopher Newport started the second set similar to the first set, jumping out to a 5-2 advantage. This time though, Johns Hopkins was able to counter and later tie the score at 5-5. The Blue Jays used the momentum from the early comeback to start a 9-3 run. That run proved costly, as CNU was never able to come back from it. Despite three kills from Kyla McIntyre and Maddie Carter, the Captains dropped the second set as Hopkins evened the match score.

Third Set (Blue Jays 25-16)

The Blue Jays hit their highest percentage of the match in the third set (.379). Their accurate attack helped them pull away from CNU, quickly building a 17-7 lead. The Captains did manage some resistance, scoring six of the next eight points, but it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit as Hopkins wrapped up the third set and took the match lead.

Fourth Set (Blue Jays 25-18)

Johns Hopkins scored the first two points, but CNU scored the next five in a row with kills from Sammy Carroll and Maddie Carter. A few points later, the Captains led 6-4, but from that point, Johns Hopkins took control of the set. The Blue Jays took 13 of the next 14 points to open up a 17-7 lead. Since the match was on the line, CNU didn't go quietly. With help from three aces, one from Julia Gleason and two from Anna Dean, they cut the Hopkins lead in half. But Johns Hopkins managed to hold off the CNU comeback as they took the set and match.
