CNU Volleyball Falls in Friday Matches against Randolph-Macon and No. 12 Emory

The Christopher Newport Volleyball team dropped both of their matches at Randolph-Macon on Friday night, suffering losses to Randolph-Macon and 12th-ranked Emory.

Randolph-Macon 3, Christopher Newport 1 | (20-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-22)

First Set

The Captains took a close first set behind some stellar attacking from Kyla McIntyre, who contributed five kills and a block in the first set. She made a difference in an early run from CNU that put them up five, but Randolph-Macon quickly evened the score. The sides traded blows until CNU's lead reached 22-20, when the Captains proceeded to score the next three in a row off of a Maddie Carter kill and two RMC errors to win the first set.

Second Set

The second set looked much like the first in that it was close throughout. Randolph-Macon held the lead for the majority of the set, but CNU always chipped away and even the score. Late in the set, a Sammy Carroll kill followed by an Anna Dean ace brought CNU within one point to cut the Randolph-Macon lead to 23-22. But the Yellow Jackets scored two points in a row to take the second set.

Third Set

Randolph-Macon's 7-point run shifted the momentum in the third set as well as the match. Prior to that, the Captains led 15-13 and had taken seven of the last ten points. But after the Yellow Jackets' run, CNU only scored two more points in the third set while RMU surged to take the third set.

Fourth Set

The two teams traded points to start the fourth set. After multiple rallies from each side, the dust settled on a 13-11 advantage for Randolph-Macon. CNU equalized each time the Yellow Jackets started pulling away, tying the score at 13-13, 18-18, and 20-20. A three point run for RMC put them ahead 23-20, but a ball handling error gave CNU some life. An attacking error brought Randolph-Macon to match point, and Kyla McIntyre's kill brought CNU a little closer before Grace Parker clinched the match for the Yellow Jackets.

No. 12 Emory 3, Christopher Newport 0 | (25-19, 25-18, 25-18)

First Set

Emory got out to a 11-6 start in the match to put early pressure on CNU. Three kills from Kyla McIntyre kept CNU within striking distance, but the Eagles continued to stay ahead. After a Macy Burk kill, Emory held a slim, 22-19 lead. But the Eagles put together back-to-back kills before capped the first set off with a service ace.

Second Set

Macy Burk started off the set with a kill to put CNU out in front, and with kills from Maddie Carter and Anna Dean, the Captains later led 10-9. But Randolph-Macon scored eight of the next nine points, six on errors, to open up a commanding lead. The Eagles never looked back after that run, securing the second set 25-18.

Third Set

The Captains started off the third set on the right foot with a 4-1 lead. Maddie Carter hit three kills in the early goings, but Emory and CNU took turns leading the set. A five point run for Emory gave them an advantage midway through the set, but the Eagles would later score five of the last six points to wrap up the match.
