FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- After making his first two collegiate appearances in goal for the Captains, sophomore
Gabe Barros was named the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts. Barros won his first-ever start against No. 5 Johns Hopkins, 2-0, before also capturing a 2-1 win at Salisbury.
The Captains picked up a marquee victory with a 2-0 shutout over Hopkins with Barros in net making his first career appearance. He is the first CNU netminder to face a nationally-ranked opponent in his debut since 2012 when
Sean Killion took on No. 1 Ohio Wesleyan in his first game on August 31, 2012, earning a 2-2 draw. Barros also became the first Captain to win a debut appearance against a ranked opponent since 2005 when Jonathan Anderson took down No. 13 Wilmington, 2-0, on September 4, 2005.
Barros made five stops against the Blue Jays, including four in the first half. The first career save came on a tough free kick from just outside the box as the sophomore keeper needed to leap and punch away a shot on target. On the ensuing corner kick just moments later, Jonathan Cui challenged the Captains' goalie with a low liner toward the left, but Barros smothered the chance. Late in the game, Barros made the lone save necessary in the second half on a header try by Logan Falzaran to clinch his first career shutout.
In his second career game three days later, Barros made a pair of saves against the Sea Gulls as they clamored for a late-match equalizer. He stopped a pair of shots by Carter Chesney in a three-minute span in the second half to preserve a 2-1 win on the road. Throughout the contest, Barros made several key plays to push back the Salisbury attack with interceptions on balls in the box to stall Sea Gull runs.
Barros joins Clark Chapamn as Captains to have earned Defensive Player of the Week honors this year.
Chris Schram was also named Offensive Player of the Week on September 20 to round out the CNU selections by the conference office this year.
With the 2-0 performance this week, the Captains improved to 7-3-2 overall with a win streak that has reached four games heading into the final two weeks of the regular season.
