CNU Men's Soccer Picks Up 2-1 Win on the Road Against Salisbury Saturday

SALISBURY, Md. -- Winning their fourth straight, the Christopher Newport men's soccer team picked up a come-from-behind 2-1 win at Salisbury University (5-6-1) on Saturday afternoon. Will Collins scored the game-tying goal and added the assist on the game-winning goal to lead the Captains as they improved to 7-3-2 overall this season.

CNU has scored multiple goals in four straight games as they have a modest win streak going in the late stages of the regular season. Offensively, seven different Captains have scored during the roll in which the Captains have scored 10 goals.

On Saturday, the Captains fell behind Salisbury early in the first half as the home team took advantage of a loose ball. A Sea Gulls cross into the box was headed right to the foot of Conner Appleby in the box and he rushed a shot toward the left side of the goal. CNU goalkeeper Gabe Barros was screened by the group in the box and dove just a split second too late to make the stop as the shot slipped by his diving save attempt.

The same misfortune would befall the the Salisbury keeper in the 23rd minute when the Captains earned the equalizer off the foot of senior Will Collins. A nice cross was played into the box for CNU by Cory Hogge but a Salisbury defender deflected it out to the top of the box for the waiting Captains' attacker. He took aim at the right post and with too many bodies in front of him, the Salisbury GK did not have a chance to stop Collins' left-footed game-tying goal.

Collins picked up his third score in the last four games as the senior forward has caught fire for the Captains' offense. He has three goals and two assists during the CNU win streak, factoring into half of the goals scored by his team.

The Captains' continued to apply pressure in the first half as they looked to take the lead. Just under 10 minutes after the first CNU goal, the Captains' broke through with the second, and eventual game-winning strike.

On a long kick from the Sea Gulls goalkeeper, Ethan Larson made an aggressive play to win possession for the Captains with a diving header upfield. Harry Whittleton chased down the second ball and rolled a picture-perfect pass across the middle to Collins, who one-touched it to Tanner Dail as the Captains raced ahead on a 3v1 advantage. Once the ball reached Dail's foot, he wasted no time ripping a left-footed shot on frame for the score.

The game-winning goal was the first of the season for Tanner Dail, who was the 2018 Conference Rookie of the Year after scoring four goals, including two winners, out of the midfield as a rookie. Collins and Whittleton each picked up assists on the beautiful play across the middle as the former earned his third and the latter his first helper of the season.

With all the fireworks coming in the first half, the defenses actually did a spectacular job limiting chances on both ends of the field. Only six shots were taken combined in the first half and only 11 total in the game. Barros made two saves in net for the Captains while Ryan Miller made one for the home team with a team save accounting for the one remaining shot on goal.

Christopher Newport will look to continue it's win streak on the road as it takes on the University of Mary Washington in a pivotal matchup on October 23 at Noon. Live stats and a live video webcast will be available from the Battleground complex in Fredericksburg, Va.
