FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The nationally-ranked Christopher Newport men's soccer team saw it's four-match win streak come to an end on Saturday afternoon as Mary Washington edged out the Captains, 2-1, at the Battlefield Complex in Fredericksburg, Va. Senior
Will Collins scored a first-half goal for CNU but the home team answered with a pair in the first 45 minutes to slip by the Captains.
Mary Washington captured the win between the two regionally-ranked opponents and improved to 8-3-2 overall. Will Thompson scored the game-winning goal in the 42nd minute of action off a pair of assists by Gabe Francesconi and Joren Santana.
The Eagles jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Josh Kirkland scored just over eight minutes into the match. Jacob Kautzman took a corner kick for Mary Washington and Kirkland finished for the 1-0 lead.
Christopher Newport answered in the 27th minute by getting an equalizer from Collins. Senior midfielder set up the scoring strike by Collins for his fourth goal of the year. Hogge notched his second helper of the year with the assist as the team's two leading scorers connected for the tally.
Unfortunately for the Captains, the momentum did not hold as the home team rebounded with the eventual gamewinner in the 42nd minute.
CNU took 11 total shots in the game, putting four on frame. Collins had two on net and
Brendan Todd added a pair on-goal off the bench. Mary Washington also had 11 attempts, putting seven on goal.
With the setback, Christopher Newport falls to 7-4-2 overall with just one game left on the regular season schedule. The Captains will welcome Salisbury ito Newport News on Wednesday evening for Senior Night. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 pm.
