Live Stats // Video Stream

RALEIGH, N.C. --
The Christopher Newport field hockey team will return to action on Sunday at noon when the Captains take on Sewanee in a neutral-site tilt at the Meredith College Athletic Complex in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Coming into the weekend, the Captains currently sit at 7-4 on the season. Meanwhile, Sewanee is 3-6 and will square off with Meredith on Saturday before facing Christopher Newport on Sunday.

For those fans unable to attend the game, live stats and a video stream of the action will be available at GoAvengingAngels.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.

Christopher Newport was last in action on Tuesday when the squad toppled Mary Washington, 4-0, during the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference opener in Fredericksburg. Against the Eagles, Mauri Ware erupted for her third multi-goal effort of the season after depositing a pair of strikes in the first half. Katie Abendschoen also added three points, while Marcella Sabbagh became the 14th player in program history with a goal and defensive save in the same game. The junior star has now scored in three straight contests while helping anchor the defensive unit as well.

In addition to Sabbagh's work against Mary Washington, Gabi Gray added five saves while helping the Captains register their fourth shutout of the season. It also marked the first time Christopher Newport has shut out Mary Washington in Fredericksburg since 2014.

Tuesday's game also continued a record-setting streak for the squad. Christopher Newport has scored at least three goals in eight straight games dating back to September 11. That not only stands as the longest run in program history, but it also ranks as the longest active streak by any team in the nation.

Overall, the Captains stand 19th in the NCAA with a 3.82 goals-per-game average this season. Incredibly, 11 different players have already scored a goal this year, while 13 have collected at least one point. Among them, Abby Asuncion leads the way with 12 goals and 26 points, while Ware is second on the squad with eight tallies.

Sewanee comes into the weekend on a two-game roll after sweeping back-to-back bouts against Transylvania. Last weekend, the Tigers blanked the Pioneers, 3-0, on Saturday and, 2-0, on Sunday. Moira Darling posted three goals during the two-game set, while Caroline Pulliam had three assists.

So far this season, Darling leads Sewanee with eight goals, and Annie West sits second with five strikes and 11 points. Between the pipes, three different Tigers have earned starts while combining for a .667 save percentage and 2.67 goals-against-average. Claire Damare leads the team with 22 saves, while Barbara Canty has a .680 save percentage and 2.29 goals-against-average.

Sunday's bout will mark the first meeting between Christopher Newport and Sewanee.

After this weekend, the Captains will kick off a three-game homestand on October 22 when the team hosts Lynchburg at 7 p.m.
