Alec Strause Leads CNU Men's Tennis on Day One of ITA Southeast Regional Championship

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Junior Alec Strause picked up a pair of singles wins and one doubles victory to lead Christopher Newport men's tennis on the first day of the 2021 ITA Southeast Regional Championships Friday afternoon. Strause advanced to the Round of 16 in the Championship draw in both singles and doubles and will return to action Saturday morning with quarterfinal berths on the line.

CNU collected three singles wins on the first day and three doubles pairings won at least one match for the Captains as well.

Strause highlighted the action in the Championship Singles draw while playing as a co-No. 9 seed. The Captains' veteran defeated Nicholas Alvarado (Randolph College) in the opening round, 6-0,6 -2, and then matched up against Southern Virginia's Daniel Blonquist in the Round of 32. Strause pulled out a 6-4, 7-5 win in the second round and will now take on Johns Hopkins' No. 4 seed Rohan Reddy in Saturday mornings Round of 16. That match is tentatively scheduled for Noon.

Earlier in the day, Strause also paired with Ryan Macy as the No. 4 seed in the Championship Doubles draw. After a first-round bye, the CNU tandem disposed of Salisbury's Brad Pappalardo and Gianluca Beaujon by a final score of 8-4. At 8:00 am on Saturday, Strause and Macy will take on Southern Virginia's Drake/Bassett pairing for a chance to advance to the quarterfinals.

Also still alive in the championship draw are Mason Kolls and Dawson Driscoll, who also earned a first-round bye. Kolls and Driscoll then defeated Hampden-Sydney's Barrett Foster and Tyler Brice in an 8-2 match. The veteran CNU pairing will take on Mary Washington's 2nd seeded pairing of Hutchison/Watson in the Round of 16.

Rounding out the wins for CNU on Friday was Paul Baron and Theodor Risebrobakken in doubles action, defeating Alvarado/Kulvivat (RC), 8-1, before dropping a hotly contested bout against top-seeded Dias/Blonquist (SVU) in the second round, 8-6. In singles, Mason Kolls won in the B6 flight, dropping Mary Washington's Foster Evans (6-2, 4-6, 10-2).

Full scores and a recap of day two action will be available on CNUsports.com following play on Saturday.
