NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport puts its ten-game winning streak on the line Wednesday night, traveling to St. Mary's City, Maryland, to take on the Seahawks of St. Mary's College. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m. at the O'Brien Athletics and Recreational Center Arena.
The Captains are 17-4 overall and lead the Capital Athletic Conference standings with a 6-0 mark in league play. The Seahawks are 7-14 and 2-4, and have dropped their last two games. The squads met just a week ago at the Freeman Center in a game that saw the Captains pull away to a 93-58 victory.
Junior guard
Jason Aigner has led the Captains in the scoring column the last two games with 21 points against St. Mary's last Wednesday followed by a career-high 30 points in Saturday's home victory over Mary Washington. Aigner is now just 30 points from 1,000 for his career as a Captain, and knocked down eight three-pointers in Saturday's win, all in the first half, for a new school record for triples in a half. Aigner tops the squad in scoring for the year with an average of 13.2 points per game.
Senior
Dalon McHugh II has also been on a tear, and has registered four straight double-doubles. McHugh scored 14 points and pulled down 12 rebounds on Saturday vs. the Eagles, and posted 16 points and 11 rebounds last Wednesday vs. the Seahawks. McHugh is the first Christopher Newport player to record four straight double-doubles since Nik Biberaj in 2013. Another double-double on Wednesday would make him the first with five straight since Antoine Sinclair in 1999. McHugh is now averaging 12.3 points and a team-high 7.4 rebounds per contest this season.
The Captains have not lost a game since December 15th at Virginia Wesleyan. In addition to their ten-game winning streak, Christopher Newport has won 11 straight games over St. Mary's, and the Captains hold an 18-9 advantage in the all-time series. The Seahawks were without their leading scorer last week, 6-6 junior transfer Miles Gillette, who is averaging 16.9 points per game. Gillette returned to the squad for Saturday's 84-80 defeat to Salisbury, and came off the bench to score 26 points.Â
Wednesday's game will be broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning at 6:40 p.m. The game will also be streamed live on CNUsports.com/watch.
