SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The Christopher Newport women's tennis team suffered a 7-2 setback on the road Sunday against No. 24 Swarthmore College (3-1). The Captains fell to 1-5 overall.
Against the Garnet, Christopher Newport earned one doubles win and one singles win. In doubles action, senior tandem
Johanna Ranta-aho and
Olivia Reed captured an 8-5 win over Elise Talley and Christina Wang. The win in the match at No. 1 doubles improved the Captains duo to 3-2 to start the spring season.
In singles play, junior
Kara Ferner earned the lone point for Christopher Newport with a straight set victory at No. 4. Ferner defeated Wang 6-2, 6-1 and earned her second dual win of the season.
Three of the singles losses ofr Christopher Newport went to a third set tiebreaker. At No. 1 singles, Ranta-aho was facing regionally-ranked Emma Kassan and won the first set, 7-5, but ultimately fell to the Garnet's leader by a final score of 5-7, 6-1, 7-6 (4). Reed also won her first set, 6-2, but went down in three to Sonia Varma 2-6, 6-0, 6-0. Finally,
Reagan Delp narrowly lost her match at No. 3 singles against Jenny Lewis by a scre of 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-4.
Christopher Newport will now head to California for the team's annual cross-country spring break road trip. The Captains will face Chapman, Caltech, and Redlands in the Golden State from March 1-6.
