Christopher Newport Women's Tennis Sneaks Past Chapman, 5-4, in First California Match

ORANGE, Calif. -- In the first match of their annual spring break trip to California, the Christopher Newport women's team captured a 5-4 win at Chapman University.

The match was very close in nearly all of the head-to-head battles. Playing singles first due to a rain delay, the Captains pulled out a 4-2 lead heading into doubles play. Reagan Delp had the only quick match of the afternoon, defeating her opponent Madison Ross at No. 3 singles without surrendering a game, 6-0, 6-0. After that, the other three Captains wins and the two setbacks all included at least one set that was stretched to a seventh game.

Johanna Ranta-aho downed Tatum Phillips on the top line by a final score of 6-3, 7-6 (4); at No. 4, Kara Ferner bounced back against Aliya Allyn in three sets 4-6, 7-5, 6-3; and Kendra Womack won a first-set tiebreaker to take down Anna Kaplan at No. 6, 7-6 (4), 6-1. Even the two Captains' losses were hard-fought as Olivia Reed fell to Liza Antonova at No. 2 by a score of 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-4 and Amanda Yermal was denied in three sets at No. 5 against Vasilia Trofimova 5-7, 6-3, 6-1.

Needing just one point to clinch the win, Ranta-aho and Reed paired up for the victory at No. 1 doubles. They cruised to an 8-1 win over Phillips and Mary Williams to give the Captains their second win of the season.

Christopher Newport will return to action on Monday, March 2 as they play Caltech.
