NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will play its first game at Jennings Family Stadium on Saturday at 2 p.m. when the Captains welcome Roanoke to town for a non-conference battle.
Entering the game, Christopher Newport sits at 0-1 after a hard-fought 11-10 setback at Shenandoah in the season opener. Meanwhile, Roanoke will be making its first appearance of the year on Saturday.
For those fans unable to attend the game, live stats and a video stream of the action will be available at CNUsports.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.
The Captains are looking to bounce back after dropping a one-goal decision to Shenandoah last week. During that battle, Christopher Newport received several huge contributions from its freshman class.
Hope Hunter became the first rookie to register a hat-trick in her debut since 2016, while
Kelsey Winters dished out four assists, equaling the second-highest total by a freshman in school history.
Along with the offensive exploits,
Becca Creekmore came through with 13 saves, including six on free-position attempts. Her 13 total stops equaled the most by a Captain in her collegiate debut, tying All-Region standout Emma Walsh, who also had 13 at Shenandoah in 2016.
Incredibly, the Captains stifled 11 of Shenandoah's 15 free-position attempts on Saturday, which equaled the most eight-meter stops by the squad in program history.
On the other side of the field, Roanoke will be making its season debut after being selected third in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches Poll. The Maroons are led by a decorated veteran contingent, headlined by All-Region honoree Emerson Foster. The sophomore midfielder ranked fifth in the conference with 82 draw controls while also collecting 35 ground balls.
Along with Foster, Ellie Armstrong and Lilly Blair also garnered All-League accolades last season. Armstrong finished fourth in the ODAC with 54 goals in 2019, while Blair ranked second among league freshmen with 57 points.
The two programs have met 15 times with the Captains holding a slim 8-7 edge in the series. Last year, Christopher Newport walked away with a 19-12 triumph in Puerto Rico. During that battle,
Cat Leighty registered 11 points, which equaled the third-highest total in program history.
Gracie Sanders,
Zoe Dyer, and
Katie Orrison all had hat-tricks during that game as well.
Following this weekend's action, the Captains will travel to Virginia Wesleyan for a 7 p.m. tilt on February 26.
