CHESTERTOWN, MD. –It was a New year, but a similar result for Christopher Newport's men's basketball squad Thursday afternoon. The Captains opened 2020 by posting another decisive victory just as they did last weekend in their final two games of 2019.
John Krikorian's team defeated Washington College, 89-57, at Cain Athletic Center to improve to 10-4 on the season.
The Captains never trailed in the game, held a 49-25 edge at halftime, and then led by as many as 44 in the second half. Christopher Newport won games last weekend by 44 and 19 points in its two victories in the Captains Shootout at the Freeman Center.
"That may have been the most complete game we've played this season," Krikorian said following the victory. "We were able to set the tone early by hitting our shots and our defense again turned up the intensity except for a few lapses in the second half."
Junior
Jason Aigner led the attack with 17 points Thursday, including four three-point field goals. The Captains made 12 threes on 26 attempts, and shot 52 percent for the game (33 of 64). Sophomore
Tyler Trimble added 12 points, and senior
Nick Parks also reached double figures with 11. The Captains out-rebounded the Shoremen, 43-33, with senior
Dalon McHugh II leading the way with ten boards to go with his nine points.
Christopher Newport's defense held the Shoremen to just 35 percent shooting (25 of 57). Washington College fell to 3-8 with the loss, and was led by Dilyn Becker's 15-point effort. The Shoremen were coming off a 15-day break since last seeing action, and have now dropped six of their last seven games.
The Captains were again able to play all 15 players dressed, and 13 again reached the scoring column. Christopher Newport has now won the last five games in the all-time series with the Shoremen, and is 5-1 in six meetings. Thursday's game was the first time the schools have played since 2004.
