CHESTER, Pa. - Senior
Dalon McHugh II posted a career-high 25 points Saturday, leading the Captains of Christopher Newport to a 92-81 victory at Widener University. The Captains, now 11-4, completed their non-conference schedule with their fourth straight victory. Christopher Newport sizzled in the second half, scoring 60 points, and then had to hold off a late charge by the Pride.
"I thought we had played pretty well in the first half, but we had only 32 points to show for it," Head Coach
John Krikorian said. "We really got it going in the second half, but then had to hold off quite a comeback. Widener is a talented team and gave us everything they had down the stretch...we were fortunate to make some big shots and our foul shots when we had to."
Five Captains reached double figures led by McHugh's 25. Junior
Adrian Beasley tallied 13, seniors
Luther Gibbs and
Nick Parks scored a dozen each, and junior
Jason Aigner posted all 11 of his points in the second half.
Christopher Newport trailed in the early-going, but went on a 14-0 run in the opening half to open a 20-13 lead. The Pride, now 10-2, battled back and trailed by just three at the intermission, 32-29. The game would be decided in the early second half when the Captains went on a 39-17 run to surge to their biggest lead of the day, 71-46, with 9:11 to play. Widener would not go quietly, and the Pride responded with a 34-15 run of their own to cut the lead to six, 86-80, with 45 seconds left. Christopher Newport was able to put the game away in the final minute as Aigner, Beasley, and Gibbs each went to the line to knock down two free throws to end the comeback bid.
The Captains shot 53 percent for the day (34 of 64), but made 21 of 33 from the field in the second half (64 percent). Christopher Newport out-rebounded Widener, 41-37, led by freshman
Ian Anderson's 10 rebounds.
The game at Swartz Center was the first ever between the Captains and Pride. Four Widener players scored in double digits, led by Kenny Lewis' 17 points. The Pride has now lost two straight, with their only other defeat coming at the hands of Division I Lafayette.
John Krikorian's squad now has ten games remaining, and begins play in the Capital Athletic Conference on Friday, hosting the Spartans of York College (Pa.). Tipoff time at the Freeman Center is set for 5:30 p.m.
