Captains Capture High-Scoring Battle at Mary Washington, 97-84, for Seventh Straight Victory

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - A trio of Captains scored 18 points Saturday as Christopher Newport ran its winning streak to seven straight games with a 97-84 triumph at Mary Washington. Senior Dalon McHugh II recorded a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds, while juniors Jason Aigner and Adrian Beasley also both reached 18 in the scoring column. The victory at Ron Rosner Arena on the UMW campus improved the Captains record to 14-4 overall and 3-0 atop the Capital Athletic Conference. Two other Captains reached double digits as senior Nick Parks added 11 points and freshman Ian Anderson posted ten.

The Captains and Eagles exchanged the lead in the opening half, and Mary Washington held a 37-31 advantage with 4:53 to play before halftime. The Captains then went on a 17-2 run to build a 48-39 advantage at the intermission. Christopher Newport never relinquished the lead in the second half, and led by as many as 16 on the way to the 13-point victory. The Eagles, now 11-7 overall and 1-2 in the CAC, never got closer than eight after halftime.

"We put a lot of effort into finishing each half in a strong manner," Head Coach John Krikorian said following the win. "We had some fresh troops in there late in the first half and I think Mary Washington was coming up short on many of their shots. That run got us in a good position and we were able to keep up our intensity through the second half."

Both teams shot 48 percent from the field, but the Captains also made 14 of 30 three-point shots (42 percent). Christopher Newport also converted 21 of 23 foul shots on the day (91 percent). The Captains out-rebounded the Eagles, 45-30, led by McHugh's dozen boards. Senior Luther Gibbs registered a team-high eight assists as the Captains notched assists on 22 of their 31 made baskets.

The effort matched the Captains' highest offensive output of the year. Christopher Newport also scored 97 points in a 97-78 home victory over Wesley on December 29th at the Freeman Center. It was the fifth time this year Christopher Newport has finished with over 90 points.

Five of Mary Washington's six players to reach the scoring column ended up in double figures, led by Greg Rowson's 22-point effort. Christopher Newport now leads the all-time series with UMW, 30-7, and the Captains have won 11 of the last 12 in the series. The teams will meet again on February 1st at the Freeman Center.

The Captains have not lost since returning from holiday break, and their last defeat came on December 15th at Virginia Wesleyan. Christopher Newport now has a week off before traveling to Salisbury, Md., next Saturday, January 25th. Christopher Newport will play the Sea Gulls of Salisbury in a 4:00 p.m. start.
