BUENA VISTA, Va. - Christopher Newport began a stretch of three straight road contests with an 83-55 victory Wednesday night over Southern Virginia University. The win was the sixth straight for the Captains, who improved to 13-4 overall and 2-0 in the Capital Athletic Conference. Senior
Dalon McHugh II led the way for the third straight game, scoring 21 points on seven-of-ten shooting. Senior
Cutch Ellis also finished in double figures with 16 points, all in the opening half.
Southern Virginia, now 1-16 overall and 0-2 in the CAC, had its only lead of the game in the opening minute, 2-0, before the Captains took control. Christopher Newport built the lead to 17 at halftime, 45-28, and then scored the first 11 points of the second half to blow the game open. The Captains led by as many as 29 en route to the 28-point final verdict.
"This was a night where we were able to attain all of our game goals we had established coming in," Head Coach
John Krikorian said. "We defended well, rebounded, and limited our turnovers. Southern Virginia has a lot more talent than their record reflects, and overall I thought we did a pretty good job most of the night."
Ellis helped the Captains build the first half advantage at Knight Arena by knocking down four three-pointers on seven attempts before halftime. "Cutch really took advantage of the looks he was getting," Krikorian continued. "He's a great shooter and those threes really got us going."
Christopher Newport's defense held the Knights to just 35 percent shooting for the night (20 of 57). The Captains out-rebounded SVU, 45-33, and were led in the rebounding column by senior
Nick Parks with six. The Captains made 29 of 65 shots (45 percent) and knocked down ten of 31 attempts from three-point range.
The defeat was the eighth straight for the Knights. The Captains are now 19-1 all-time vs. Southern Virginia, and have won ten straight in the series. The schools will conclude the regular season on February 19th with a rematch at the Freeman Center.
Christopher Newport returns to action on Saturday, playing at Mary Washington. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m. in Fredericksburg.
