NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- In the first conference game of the season, Christopher Newport junior
Justin Wilson scored twice to lead the Captains to a 3-0 win over York College of Pennsylvania on Saturday night. The Captains got back in the win column improving to 4-1-3 overall and 1-0-0 in Capital Athletic Conference play.
Wilson was all over the attack in the contest, narrowly missing a hat trick with several close calls including a highlight-worthy bicycle attempt in the second half. He finished the game with nine total shots taken and five on-frame.
Captains fans would not need to wait long to see Wilson and the offense get started. Less than three minutes into the game, senior goalkeeper
Justin Piercy smashed a booming long ball that bounced over the Spartans defense where Wilson raced to the ball first. His first touch chipped the goalkeeper to the right and tickled the twine for the early goal.
His second goal came just over 15 minutes later when sophomore
Will Collins set up the play. In the 21st minute, Wilson and Collins combined for the score on a nifty back-and-forth. After a long pass from the middle of the field was headed by Collins, Wilson settled with a pass back to his teammate in the box. Collins then raced by a defender toward the goal line and Wilson crashed toward the goalmouth; the two hooked up for the one-timer shot on a hard low pass by Collins and a sliding shot by Wilson.
The tallies were his second and third goals of the season as he moved to within one point of the team's scoring lead with seven points scored this year.
The Captains carried a 2-0 lead into halftime and would still lead by a pair until the 72nd minute when
Lincoln Kickbush extended the lead. Rookie
Colin McMunn made a nice run up the left side by his defender before slotting a cross into the box for
Gabe Splett. Splett touched a pass to the middle for Kickbush who hammered home a hard shot to the middle of the netting for the score.
Christopher Newport outshot York, 20-10, including 11 shots on-frame. The defense picked up it's second shutout in the last three games and third of the season as Piercy earned his second clean sheet of the year.
The Captains will return to action on Tuesday, October 1 at Southern Virginia University for a 7:00 pm kickoff.
