BUENA VISTA, Va. -- Sophomore
Lincoln Kickbush scored both goals for the Christopher Newport men's soccer team on Tuesday night as the Captains traveled to Southern Virginia University to pick up a 2-0 road win in conference play. The Captains improved to 5-1-3 overall, 2-0-0 in Capital Athletic Conference action while SVU is now 2-9-0, 0-2-0.
With the win, the Captains improved to 7-0-0 against Southern Virginia all-time after outshooting the Knights by a final count of 30-3. Christopher Newport put 12 shots on frame while none of the three attempts from Southern Virginia challenged the Captains' goalkeepers.
Throughout the contest, the Christopher Newport offense surged forward against the Knights defense. In the first half, the Captains took 19 shots and narrowly missed on several opportunities before the game's first goal came in the 35th minute.
For the second time in as many games, it was goalkeeper
Justin Piercy who set up the Captains' first goal of the game. With the Knights defense packing it in, Piercy was able to pull the ball well out of his own box to send a mammoth pass up the length of the field. Kickbush was the first to the ball and he played one touch to his shooting foot before blistering a hard line drive past the opposing goalkeeper for the score. It would hold up as the game-winning goal for his second of the season.
Piercy, a senior from Fredericksburg, Va., became the first Christopher Newport goalkeeper since Mark Mury in 1992 to register two assists in a single season.
In the second half, the Captains looked to senior leader
Derek Cook to set up the second goal. After
Will Collins and
Colin McMunn fought to maintain possession on the sideline, they were able to get the ball to
Davis Pillow in the back. Pillow shuffled a pass back to Cook who drove through a seam in the middle of the field. After a couple of touches, Cook saw Kickbush open and on the run on the right side of the box and placed a perfect through ball to his sophomore forward. Kickbush timed his shot perfectly and fired his second goal under the sprawling keeper for the score.
On the other end of the field, Piercy played over 77 minutes of action in the game to earn his fifth win of the season. He then gave way to
Cole Irvin as the pair locked up the team shutout.
Christopher Newport will return to action this Saturday, October 5 as they host 10th-ranked Mary Washington in CAC action at 7:30 pm.
