NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport men's soccer team closed out non-conference play with four straight double overtime games, including a 1-1 draw in their last outing against 6th-ranked Washington & Lee. On Saturday, the Captains will open conference action at home against York College of Pennsylvania with kickoff scheduled for 7:00 pm.Â
Christopher Newport is now 3-1-3 after out of league action and will shift focus on the conference schedule starting Saturday. This season, the Capital Athletic Conference soccer schedule will feature home-and-home series against each of the league opponents; the Captains' first matchup will be against York at home.Â
The Spartans have started the season 4-2-2 overall and come into Saturday's match winners in two of the last three games with the loss being a 3-2 overtime setback to national power Messiah. York took a one-game lead in the all-time series last year with a 1-0 win over the Captains, as Christopher Newport now trails the series 6-7-5.Â
Entering Saturday, the Captains defense continues to headline the team's success with just seven goals surrendered in seven games. Senior
Derek Cook anchors the back line while also serving as the team's leading scorer with 8 points on 3 goals and 2 assists. Cook has started all 7 games with
Davis Pillow and
Daniel Hulett on the back line, while
Khari Jones has started six.Â
The Captains defense is playing in front of senior goalkeeper
Justin Piercy in his first year as the starter. Piercy has made 31 saves with a save percentage of nearly 82% while boasting a 0.92 goals-against average.Â
York has been led by Zion Friday with 11 points on 5 goals and 1 assist. Friday has two game-winning goals for the Spartans while Travis Gould has come off the bench to add four tallies to rank second on the team in scoring with 8 points. Like the Captains, the York defense has been stingy, allowing just one goal per game with a goals-against average of 0.92 this season.Â
Live stats and a live video webcast will be available at CNUsports.com for all the action. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 pm as the back-end of a conference doubleheader with the women's teams.Â
