FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Olivia Davis has been named the Capital Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week after leading the 13th-ranked Christopher Newport field hockey team to a victory over Washington & Lee on Saturday.
The weekly honor is the third of Davis' decorated career. She was previously celebrated as the Defensive Player of the Week during her junior campaign on October 1 and October 8, 2018.
In her lone appearance of the week, Davis anchored a stingy defensive unit that suffocated the Generals on the way to a 1-0 triumph. Leading the way between the pipes, the Ashburn, Virginia native made six total saves during the contest, including a remarkable run in the second half.
After making two stops during the first 30 minutes, Davis continued to clamp down on Washington & Lee as the opposition picked up the pressure in the second half. She made three saves in the third quarter, including a key play to brush aside a penalty corner attempt during a sustained rally late in the stanza.
Capping off the shutout, Davis came back with one last save following another penalty corner with less than four minutes remaining in regulation to stymie Washington & Lee's final offensive surge.
Coupled with her 1-0 victory over No. 9 Rochester during the first week of the season, Davis added her name to the history books with her second 1-0 win of the season. She joined fellow All-Region performers Stephanie McKinney, Bailey Lien, and Jamie Dowling as the only goalies in program history to have a pair of 1-0 victories in a single campaign.
Her efforts on Saturday also helped her climb the program's all-time charts. Davis moved into fourth in program history in career wins (18) and shutouts (6) following her performance against the Generals. With her six saves, she also bumped her career total to 106, which vaulted her into sixth-place on the all-time charts.
So far this season, Davis leads the Capital with a .788 save percentage. Her .809 career mark also stands as the 10th-best save percentage among active goalkeepers at any level of the NCAA.
Davis and the rest of her teammates will return to action on Wednesday when the Captains travel to Bridgewater for a 6 p.m. test against the Eagles.
