100 Points! Riley Cook Becomes Third Captain to Reach Century Mark in 2-0 Win Over Mary Hardin-Baylor

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Becoming just the third Christopher Newport player ever to reach 100 points in her career and the first to do so in her third season, junior Riley Cook scored a pair of goals to lead the fourth-ranked Captains (6-0-1) to a 2-0 neutral site victory over Mary Hardin-Baylor (2-4-0) on Friday night. Playing on the campus of Trinity University, Cook logged a goal apiece in the first and second halves and moved into a tie for second all-time in scoring with 103 career points.

An offensive juggernaut throughout her career, Cook has been racing up the all-time scoring charts at Christopher Newport since stepping foot on campus. The record-setting forward from Mechanicsville, Va. notched her 46th goal in her 48th game and is now tied with Emma O'Reilly for second all-time for CNU women's soccer. The all-time leader, Victoria Perry, is just six points ahead of Cook with 109 career points. With the two goals, Cook also moved to within one goal shy of O'Reilly's all-time goals scored record of 47 career scoring shots.

Her scoring prowess is not just impressive in Christopher Newport lore, but is already registering among the top careers in Division III during her tenure. She currently ranks tied for 10th with Elizabethtown senior Lydia Lawson among active players with 46 career goals. She also ranks second among active non-seniors in both goals scored and points scored.

In Friday night's contest against the Cru, Cook connected on her program-record 19th career game-winning goal with exactly 12 minutes remaining in the first half. The play was created after a terrific chance by junior Madison Cochran right at the top of the box. Cochran had the ball in the center of the field about 19 yards out when she spun and blistered a rocket of a shot toward the left side of the goal. The Mary Hardin-Baylor keeper dove and saved the chance, but the rebound ricocheted right to rookie Sarah Rhiel. Rhiel drove by a defender and then slipped a low pass to the middle of the box for Cook who connected on a one-touch goal by the sprawling keeper.

Rhiel now has four helpers in her first seven career games out of the midfield for Christopher Newport. She becomes the 11th different player to assist on a Riley Cook goal in her career.

The offense scored just twice in the game but pressured the Cru defense throughout the contest. Cook took 10 shots and put eight on frame. One of her two missed on-goal opportunities glanced off the crossbar after a beautiful pass from Maxine Borris from the right side. Emily Talotta added four shots with three on frame as the Captains combined for 23 shots total and 14 on-target.

The second goal came with eight minutes remaining in the second half on a perfect through ball by Abby Harrigan. The sophomore midfielder intercepted a pass out of the Mary Hardin-Baylor midfield and charged up the center of the pitch. After getting by a defender, she slipped a low bouncer just to the right of her streaking forward behind the defense. Cook connected on her first touch to the right side of the goal.

While the offense was charging toward the Cru keeper all night, the Captains defense refused to bend against the opposing attack. For the sixth time this season, the Christopher Newport defense held their opponent scoreless and the Cru managed just one shot on-goal against the Captains. That attempt came early in the second half as Taylor Marques was able to get a line drive attempt on frame but junior goalkeeper Haley Eiser snagged the shot with ease. The back line allowed only three more shots in the contest, holding Mary Hardin-Baylor to just four total attempts.

Lulu Manley, Keiley McCarthy, and Jill McDonald started in the back while Montana Coward also pitched in for the defense in the clean sheet. Overall, Christopher Newport outshot the Cru by a final count of 23-4 as the defense has been one of the stingiest units nationally so far this season.

The Captains offense has now scored multiple goals in five of the seven games this season and dating back to last year, 20 of the last 24 matches.

Christopher Newport will have the day off Saturday before returning to the same field on Sunday, September 22 to take on host Trinity University, ranked No. 11 in the United Soccer Coaches national rankings. Kickoff against the Tigers is scheduled for Noon locally, 1:00 pm Eastern standard time.
