SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Another game played, another record broken. Christopher Newport junior forward
Riley Cook scored twice to carry the fourth-ranked Captains (7-0-1) to a 2-0 victory at 23rd-ranked Trinity (Texas) on Sunday afternoon and in the process, became the program's all-time leader in goals scored. Cook passed Emma O'Reilly's program record 47 career goals set from 2010-13 and is now just two points shy of Victoria Perry's program scoring record of 109 career points.
The nationally-ranked battle favored the Captains throughout the match but remained scoreless through the first half despite a decided advantage in total shots. Then, early in the second half, a 42-second span would flip the scoreless match into a 2-0 lead for the Captains.
On the first goal, senior midfielder
Shaye Doherty played a long ball into the right corner for senior
Carson Pokorny, who won the footchase with her defender. Pokorny's first touch was a cross into the box for Cook and the junior promptly tied O'Reilly's record with a shot into the top of the goal.
Off the next whistle, the Captains' All-American forward wasted no time in extending the lead to 2-0 and securing the top spot on the Christopher Newport goal scoring chart. A nice run by
Emily Talotta down the left side found the junior midfielder open for a cross into the box. A Trinity defender intercepted the pass, but the ball glanced off her foot right to the center of the box where Cook was loose and crashing alone. With an open look at the goal, the Mechanicsville, Va. native hammered home a left-footed shot into the left side of the goal.
With two goals in just 42 seconds of play, Cook also set the program record for fastest consecutive goals by the same player, besting the previous mark of 1:07 set in 2007 by Amanda Peters vs. Johns Hopkins. This season, Cook now has eight goals and one assist for 17 points in the first eight games of the season, continuing to add to her impressive program records for points per game (2.18) and goals per game (0.98). The first goal would also hold up as the game-winning goal, her third of the season and 20th career winner.
While Cook continues to solidify her position as one of the top goal scorers in the nation, the Captains defense has been firing on all cylinders all season long. Senior
Keiley McCarthy anchors a back line that includes junior
Lulu Manley, freshman
Jill McDonald, and junior goalkeeper
Haley Eiser. The defense allowed just one shot on-goal and Eiser snared the shot to keep the nationally-ranked Tigers off the board. It was the seventh shutout in eight games for the Christopher Newport defense.
Eiser was the winning keeper again, improving to 7-0-1 overall and securing her 25th career victory in just her second year as the starting goalkeeper. Eiser is now 25-2-1 all-time with 13 solo shutouts. The Captains have not allowed a goal in 17 of her 30 games played.
Most impressively for the Christopher Newport defense was holding the talented Trinity program scoreless for just the ninth time since the start of the 2012 season. That run includes 165 total games and two of the nine shutouts pitched against the Tigers were courtesy of the Captains.
In Sunday's contest, Christopher Newport outshot the home team 20-11, including a 7-1 advantage in shots on-goal. Cook took seven shots with three on frame to lead the way while
Madison Cochran registered three attempts as well.
After their third consecutive win, the Captains will return home to face 18th-ranked Lynchburg (4-2-0) on Wednesday, September 25 at 6:00 pm The game against the Hornets will conclude non-conference action for Christopher Newport. Live stats and a live video webcast will be available at kickoff.
