Newport News, Va. - The Christopher Newport Volleyball team dominated William Peace from the outset in a 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-16) win over the previously undefeated Pacers. Christopher Newport, who is receiving votes in this week's AVCA Top 25 poll, ups their record to 5-6 while William Peace drops to 9-1.
With the score tied 4-4 early in the first set, CNU rolled off an 8-1 run to go up 12-5. The Captains would go on to lead by as many as 10 and the Pacers would trail by at least six the rest of the way.
CNU opened with the first three points of the second game. The Pacers hung around thru 19 points, trailing 12-7, but a 4-0 Captains run pushed the lead to 16-7. The lead hovered around nine for most of the rest of the set, with the Captains pushing it to 22-12. WPU secured the next three points to close the deficit to seven, but any hopes of a comeback came well short.
WPU held the first leads of the match to start the third set, scoring the the first two points and took a 3-2 lead off a service error. The lead proved short-lived as the Captains reeled off the next five points and 14 of the next 18 points to go up 16-7. The Captains maintained the lead around an eight-point margin until 19-11, then the Pacers used a four-point sport to make things interested at 19-15. WPU's comeback try once again proved futile as CNU rolled from there by tallying six of the last seven markers to secure the win.
Katie Crofford and Katie Piper sizzled on attack. Crofford recorded 14 kills with only one error for a .464 hitting percentage to go with an ace, a solo block, and five digs. Piper posted a double-double with 11 kills to just two errors for a .474 hitting percentage along with three aces and a team-high 12 digs. Sammy Carroll contributed 27 assists to go with two service aces and eight digs. Riley Garrison notched three blocks, two solo, along with four kills.
CNU heads up to Pennsylvania for a second consecutive weekend for four matches in the Knights Invitational hosted by Neumann University in Aston, Pa.
