Captains Suffer 2-1 Double Overtime Loss to Hardin-Simmons in Men's Soccer Action Saturday

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Senior Derek Cook notched his team-leading third goal of the season to give the Christopher Newport men's soccer team a first-half lead, but the Cowboys of Hardin-Simmons University came from behind to spoil the Captains trip to Texas with a 2-1 double overtime setback on Saturday night.

Christopher Newport outshot Hardin-Simmons 19-9, including a 14-4 advantage after the first half, but were unable to connect on a second goal. The Captains fell to 3-1-1 overall while Hardin-Simmons improved to 6-0-0 after their second straight overtime victory.

Offensively, the Captains put pressure on Hardin-Simmons goalkeeper Rafa Mejorado from the outset. He made a pivotal save on a penalty kick attempt in the sixth minute of action and also turned away shots by Cory Hogge and Ethan Larson in the first 12 minutes. The Captains cashed in on the game's first goal in the 30th minute when they picked up their second penalty kick opportunity.

Derek Cook, who has stepped up and drilled two PK goals already this season, made his way to the spot again on Saturday. This time, Mejorado was unable to make the stop and the Captains got on the board with Cook's third goal of the year. He leads the team with eight points on 3 goals and 2 assists.

Hardin-Simmons tied the game back up with just 17 seconds remaining in the first half when Jacob Gonzales assisted on Jake Terhune's equalizer.

After the intermission, Christopher Newport ramped up it's offensive intensity looking for the go-ahead tally but with nine shots in the second half, including seven on-goal. Mejorado was up to the task, turning away the Captains time and again while his counterpart for Christopher Newport, senior Justin Piercy, stopped both shots on-goal he faced in the second half.

With the score still locked at 1-1, the teams headed back to overtime for the second straight night as both had played into extra time on Friday. Christopher Newport managed two shots, with Jared Burnett firing wide early in the first OT period and Michael Wilson challenging Mejorado for his 11th save in the 104th minute. On the ensuing Cowboys possession, Kiko Redondo set up Freddy Hernandez for the game-winning goal, his fourth of the season.

The Captains will return home to take on the University of Lynchburg this Wednesday, September 18 at 7:00 pm in their next contest. Live stats and a live video webcast will be available at CNUsports.com.
