Christopher Newport Men's Soccer Plays to Scoreless Stalemate With Lynchburg Wednesday Night

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Playing into double overtime for the third consecutive game, the Christopher Newport men's soccer team outshot the University of Lynchburg (3-1-2) by a final count of 16-4, but neither team managed to get one by the goalkeeper in a scoreless draw. The Captains record moves to 3-1-2 overall following the 0-0 final on a cool September evening at Captains Field.

The stalemate was the fifth consecutive game decided by one goal or less in the series. Nine of the last 11 games in the hotly contested series have either ended in draws or have been decided by just one goal.

The match was filled with quality runs and chances on both sides but the stalwart defensive lines turned away many chances on frame. With the teams combining for 20 total shots, there were just six shots on-goal.

The attempt that had both sides holding their breath wasn't even on net as Christopher Newport senior Michael Wilson nearly ended the game in the first overtime period. In the 95th minute, Colin McMunn battled for a ball in the corner before shuffling a pass back to defender Jacob Dudley. Dudley then hammered a cross to the top of the box where Wilson collected and found himself loose of his defender with a beautiful look at the goal. Without hesitation, the senior connected on a dazzling left-footed bender that sailed just inches wide of the upper 90.

It was the last of three total shots in the first overtime as Ayat Mohamed challenged Christopher Newport keeper Justin Piercy with a shot just over a minute into the extra time, but the senior stoned the attempt. Then, less than a minute later, freshman Kobe Smith smashed a hard shot off the body of a Lynchburg defender.

In the second extra period, the Captains controlled most of the action and again Wilson nearly ended the match. In the 105th minute, Wilson found himself in the box twirling between defenders with his back to the goal. With the ball at his feet and the goalkeeper off his line, Wilson turned and tried to slip a shot into the goal but a big recovery by the Hornets defense was able to clear the shot off the goal line. Ethan Larson connected on a header two minutes later but the Lynchburg keeper made his third save of the match to keep the Captains off the board.

As the final moments waned, a scramble by the Captains offense included a corner kick and a scrum in front of the net as the last-ditch effort went for naught. Will Collins got one more shot toward the goal but it sailed just high as the final horn sounded.

In the match, Gabo Caicedo played 93 minutes and led the team in shots with three in his first career start. He helped control the midfield and designed several of the Captains offensive runs. Collins also connected on three shots while Wilson and Larson added a pair.

Christopher Newport will return to action on Saturday, September 21 to close out the non-conference portion of its schedule against Washington & Lee University. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
