Last Second Goal Waved Off As Captains Settle For 1-1 Draw at Trinity (Texas) Friday Night

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- With three seconds remaining in double overtime, sophomore Will Collins found the back of the net with a would-be gamewinning header but the linesman nullified his goal with an offsides call that would force the Christopher Newport men's soccer team to settle for a 1-1 draw on the road in Texas on Friday night. The Captains (3-0-1) scored first but a late penalty kick goal in regulation allowed the host Trinity University Tigers (1-2-2) to tie the match.

Sophomore Cory Hogge scored his first career goal to put the Captains in front when he managed to scoot a free kick by the keeper into the left side of the goal. After a foul was called against the Tigers about 35 yards out from the goal. Hogge stepped in to serve a ball into the box. Junior forward Justin Wilson crashed toward the ball and kept the goalkeeper honest for a potential ricochet, but his teammate never connected and Hogge's long ball bounced into the corner pocket.

Hogge's goal gave the Captains the lead for the majority of regulation as the equalizer didn't come until there was less than seven minutes remaining. Andrea Codispoti stepped in to the spot and delivered the game-tying goal after a whistle in the box went against Christopher Newport.

The Captains played with a two-man advantage for nearly 45 minutes after a pair of red cards were issued to Trinity players. In overtime, the Captains had several chances going forward but none came to fruition until the potential winner off the head of Collins with just three seconds left. With that goal whistled offsides, the teams settled for a draw.

Christopher Newport will return to action on Saturday at 8:00 pm as they face Hardin-Simmons University in the second game on the campus of Trinity. Live stats and video will be available at kickoff.
