VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The first game of the 2019 campaign for Christopher Newport women's soccer was a night of firsts for several Captains players in a blowout victory over Westfield State University. A pair of Captains registered their first career goals, a freshman logged her first career point, and junior
Riley Cook notched her first goal of the season to lead Christopher Newport in a 4-0 shutout over the Owls on Friday night.
The fourth-ranked Captains improve to 1-0-0 on the season after the first game of the Virginia Wesleyan Tournament hosted by the Marlins. Westfield State falls to 0-1-0 on the opening day.
Christopher Newport got the first career score from
Ryanne Davidson late in the first half in a goal that would hold up as the game-winning strike. It was the culmination of a long barrage of shots at the Westfield State keeper, Lauryn Davis, in the first half. Davidson's winner came from long distance in the 43rd minute of action to get the Captains on the board.
The offense exploded for three more goals in the second half as four different players got into the scoring column for Christopher Newport. Quickly in the period, the Captains' fourth all-time leading scorer,
Riley Cook, picked up her first goal of the season to make it 2-0. Cook scored a program record 25 goals a year ago and continues to show off her net-finding ability with her first tally of the 2019 campaign. Her goal was assisted by
Maxine Borris, notching her 22nd career helper and first of the year.
Minutes later, junior
Madison Cochran set up
Karina Vasquez for the sophomores first career goal. In the 58th minute, Cochran slipped a pass to Vasquez and the second-year midfielder tickled the twine with her first shot of the second half.
With a 3-0 lead in hand, the Captains potent offense tacked on a fourth score in the 71st minute off the first career point from
Victoria Partin. The rookie assisted on a goal by
Hailey Shaw, a senior midfielder who scored her first ever goal with the shot.
Defensively, the Captains back line limited Westfield State to just one shot while 2018 All-Region goalkeeper
Haley Eiser earned her first win of the year.
Lulu Manley,
Shaye Doherty, and
Keiley McCarthy started in the back to lead the Christopher Newport defense to their first shutout of the season.
The Captains return to action on Saturday, August 31 as they take on Luther College in the final game of the Virginia Wesleyan Tournament. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:00 pm and a live video webcast will be available at kickoff.
