VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's soccer team picked up their second straight 4-0 decision at the Virginia Wesleyan Tournament this weekend as the Captains dispatched of Luther College on Saturday night for the win. The Captains are now 2-0-0 on the young season after junior
Riley Cook led the way with a goal and an assist against the Norse.
Sophomore
Karina Vasquez also scored her second goal of the season while rookie
Jill McDonald put away her first career score early in the second half to round out the scoring.
The dominant Captains squad outshot Luther, 16-1, in the contest and allowed just one corner kick. The defense, led by
Haley Eiser for 74 minutes in goal and rookie
Sydney Buckner for the remainder, earned its second shutout in as many games. Offensively, the Captains put another onslaught on their opposing goalkeeper with nine shots in the first half and seven in the second, including 10 shots on-frame.
Riley Cook got the scoring started while also adding to her program record for game-winning goals with the 13th of her career. She scored an unassisted goal in the 21st minute to put the Captains on the board. She would then add an assist as she shuffled a pass over to Vasquez in the 28th minute for goal number two. Rookie
Sarah Rhiel was also in on the play, tossing the ball in to Cook where she was able to set up her sophomore teammate for her second career goal.
An own goal capped the scoring in the first half as Christopher Newport took a 3-0 lead into the intermission. Cook took a free kick that deflected off a Luther defender and into the goal.
With a big lead, the Captains added to it early in the second half on a corner kick under three minutes in the period. Senior
Carson Pokorny logged her first point of the season with a picture-perfect cross into the box where McDonald headed home the scorer for her first career goal. The helper was Pokorny's 27th career assist as she continues to close in on the all-time leader, Victoria Perry, with 31.
After opening the season with two games on the same field away from home, Christopher Newport will make it three in a row as they travel back to Virginia Beach on Tuesday, September 3 to take on the host Marlins. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
