FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Facing the top-seeded University of Mary Washington for the fifth consecutive season in the Capital Athletic Conference Championship, the Captains suffered a 5-0 loss as the Eagles were crowned league champions. Christopher Newport closed the season with a 13-9 overall record while Mary Washington improved to 22-4 overall.
Facing one of the nation's elite programs this season, the upset-minded Captains battled through a strong showing in doubles play before falling to the Eagles in each of the three bouts. The closest match of the day came at No. 3 doubles where seniors
Nicholas Ruzicka and
William Trang fought desperately in what would prove to be their final collegiate showing. The Captains duo faced Michael Fleming and Patrick Hughes, an upperclassmen pairing for the Eagles, before falling in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (7-4).
The Captains also got a strong showing at No. 2 doubles from
James Baron and
Dominic Lacombe, who suffered an 8-4 loss to Ryland Byrd and Derek Hagino.
After the doubles sweep, the Eagles needed to win just two singles bouts to secure the conference championship. Cole Tecce picked up the first win with a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 6 against
Mason Kolls. Moses Hutchison then clinched the team win with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Trang at No. 3 singles.
In singles play,
Andy Mason stretched his opponent, Matt Miles, to a tiebreaker in the first set, dropping a 7-6 (7-3) decision in a tight matchup. Junior
Dominic Lacombe was leading the second set, 4-1, when the match was clinched.
Christopher Newport closes the season with a 13-9 overall record, ranked No. 12 in the Atlantic South regional poll.
