NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Playing on an unseasonably hot day at the Eyre Courts on Wednesday afternoon, the 24th-ranked Captains (13-7) were also red-hot as they shut out the third-seeded Salisbury Sea Gulls (12-7) in the Capital Athletic Conference Semifinals, 5-0. The CNU women's tennis team has now advanced to five straight CAC Championship matches and will take on top-seeded Mary Washington this Saturday, May 4 in the final.
CNU was leading all six singles matches when the deciding point was scored by
Amanda Yermal at No. 5 singles against Jordan Schaefer (6-4, 6-0). The Captains had earned first set victories across the board in a dominating semifinal victory.
Johanna Ranta-aho was the other player who finished out her singles point to help clinch the team win, picking up the victory at No. 1 singles against Annika Kezman (6-1, 6-3). Both players were ranked regionally coming into Wednesday's bout as Ranta-aho matched her win total from last season with the outing.
In doubles play, Yermal and Ranta-aho also won to lead the way for CNU with two wins on the day. Yermal paired with senior
Colette Gilbert at No. 2 doubles for an 8-5 win over Schaefer and Sydney Soto. Ranta-aho continued her dominance on the top line with
Olivia Reed, pairing for an 8-5 win over Kezman and Laura Brown. The Captains' top tandem is now 7-3 over their last ten matches and have won 12 of 17 dual appearances on the top line.
Rounding out a clean doubles sweep was the first team point of the day coming at No. 3 doubles.
Reagan Delp and
Kara Ferner paired for an 8-1 win against Taylor Cooper and Sarah Dover.
CNU will now travel to face 15th-ranked and top-seeded Mary Washington this Saturday, May 4 in the fifth consecutive CAC final featuring the Eagles and Captains. The teams will play starting at Noon.
