NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Junior starting pitchers
Trish Webb and
Aubrey Bates threw shutout ball Saturday, as the top-ranked Captains of Christopher Newport swept a doubleheader from Frostburg State. CNU, now 21-3 overall and 4-0 in the Capital Athletic Conference, took the opener, 3-0, before posting an 8-0 victory in the nightcap. The second game was stopped after five innings due to the eight-run rule. The Bobcats fell to 13-11 overall and 2-2 in the CAC.Â
The victories on a cloudy and damp day at Captains Park leave CNU alone at the top of the CAC standings.
Keith Parr's squad is the only unbeaten team left in the CAC standings.Â
Webb got the day off to a great start by allowing no runs and just five hits in the first game, going the distance to improve her record to 4-2 for the year. Bates, who is now 10-1, yielded just two hits and no runs in the five-inning nightcap. She retired the last 11 Bobcat batters and is now 37-8 in her career as a Captain.
Christopher Newport leads the nation in home runs per game, and again used the long ball to power the offense. Sophomore
Patty Maye Ohanian cracked her seventh of the season, a solo shot in the first inning of the opener to give Webb all the production she would need. Ohanian was three-for-five with three runs scored and two runs batted in for the day. Junior
Grace Wild smacked two solo line drive shots in the second game to give her three blasts for the year, and was three-for-three in the game. The Captains have now recorded 37 home runs in just 24 games this spring.
The Captains scored 11 runs on 20 hits in the doubleheader sweep, with 13 of the hits coming in the game two offensive outburst. CNU is now 13-1 at home this season, and the Captains will host the Avenging Angels of Meredith College Sunday. The non-conference twin bill is set to start at 1:30 p.m. at Captains Park.
