NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport finished off a 4-0 weekend Sunday by taking both ends of a non-conference doubleheader over Meredith College. The Captains, ranked first in the Top 25 the last two weeks, won the opener, 11-2, in a game shortened to five innings due to the eight-run rule.
Keith Parr's squad then posted a 6-2 triumph in the nightcap at Captains Park over the Avenging Angels on a sunny and pleasant afternoon on the CNU campus.
The Captains improved their record to 23-3 on the year, and 15-1 at home. CNU has now won five games in a row. Meredith, which had won six of its pervious eight games, fell to 9-21 for the season.
CNU's bats went to work early, as the Captains jumped to an early lead and never looked back...scoring three runs in the second and then four more in the third and fourth frames. Sophomore
Maddie Hool smacked a two-run home run in the second inning and freshman
Sarah Proctor crushed a three-run blast in the third. Proctor was three-for-three with three runs scored and four runs batted in for CNU in the opener.
Sophomore
Emily Weatherholtz earned the victory in the opener and improved her record to 7-0. Weatherholtz threw all five innings, giving up runs on back-to-back solo home runs in the Meredith fifth inning, the only hits she allowed in the game.
In the second game, Christopher Newport plated four runs in the second inning and cruised to the 6-2 victory. Sophomore shortstop
Natalie Carmichael drove in three of the runs with a two-run single in the second and an RBI fielder's choice in the third. Fellow sophomore
Patty Maye Ohanian drove home two runs with a second inning double as the Captains posted 17 runs on 22 hits in the twin bill.
Junior
Trish Webb entered the nightcap in the third inning in relief of starter
Aubrey Bates, and pitched the final five innings to pick up the win. She improved her record to 5-2.
Freshman outfielder
Caitlin Abernethy was four-for-five in the doubleheader, and scored five runs for the Captains. Abernethy was 10-for-14 at the plate for CNU in a week that saw the Captains go 5-1.
With home runs from Hool and Proctor on Sunday, the Captains have now crushed 39 home runs in 26 games this season. CNU led the nation last week in home runs per game, and junior
Kaitlyn Hasty was third in the country with ten long balls.
Christopher Newport returns to Capital Athletic Conference play next weekend, hosting Penn State-Harrisburg on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and York on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. at Captains Park.
