Christopher Newport is coming off of an impressive 24-5 victory against Southern Virginia on Tuesday. The 24 goals marked the program's highest output since registering a 26-1 triumph over N.C. Wesleyan on April 3, 2013. The 19-goal win was also the most lopsided contest since the Captains notched a 21-1 victory over Wesley on March 14, 2015.
Among the highlights during the game,
Julia Golden established a new career-high with five goals and seven total points. Also setting personal-bests against the Knights,
Zoe Dyer finished with six points, and
Olivia Aumais notched four.
Several Captains also posted firsts during the win over Southern Virginia.
Taylor Walker and
Kendall Krause both scored their first collegiate goals, while
Jackie Baker earned a start and contributed her first assist.
Lizzie Burgoyne also came through with her first multi-save outing after making five stops during a career-high 24 minutes of work in the crease.
Overall this season,
Kaitlyn Ready leads the CAC with 142 saves, while
Sarah Culver sits second with 40 goals. Both standouts are also closing in on history. Ready is one save away from matching Gayle Robinson's career record of 472. Culver is also one free-position goal away from breaking Meaghan Galvin's program standard of 55 set from 2014-17.
On the other side of the field, Mary Washington saw its five-game winning streak come to an end last Saturday during an 11-7 setback at No. 4 Salisbury. During the game, the Eagles and Sea Gulls were deadlocked at seven entering halftime, but SU pulled away with four unanswered goals in the second stanza.
Despite the setback, Julia Albert leads the CAC with 44 goals and 55 points, while Mackenzie Maguire has a conference-high 32 assists. Equally impressive on the defensive end, Hanna Ashby boasts a league-best .557 save percentage and 6.99 goals-against-average.
In 16 previous meetings between the two programs, Mary Washington holds a 15-1 edge. The Eagles won last year's bout, 14-10, in Fredericksburg. Culver led the Captains with six points during that game.
Cat Leighty also scored a go-ahead goal to snatch a 9-8 lead with 11 minutes remaining in that contest before UMW inched ahead with six straight tallies.
