NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Scott McAneney has been elevated to co-captain of the Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team for the remainder of the 2019 season after piecing together a tremendous start to his junior campaign.
Assuming a leadership role on the squad, McAneney will serve as a co-captain along with seniors
Will Cogan and
Drew Cornell as well as sophomore
Dylan Rice.
So far this season, McAneney has started all 12 games in the crease while compiling an 8-4 record for the nationally-ranked Captains. During his time on the field, he has registered 155 saves, which ranks second in the Capital Athletic Conference. It also currently stands as the fifth-highest single-season total in program history.
During his 12 appearances, McAneney is averaging 12.92 saves per game, which ranks first in CNU history. He currently has 10 double-digit save efforts this season, including 19 stops against Southern Virginia on March 23. McAneney also ranks third in the CAC with a .594 save percentage and a 9.10 goals-against-average this year.
In his career, the Paoli, Pennsylvania native boasts a .561 save percentage, which ranks first in program history. Honored as a second-team All-State performer last year, he also sits third all-time with an 8.83 goals-against-average, while he stands just six saves shy of joining former legends
Matt Hayden and Andy McGregor as the only Captains with at least 300 career stops.
McAneney and the rest of his teammates will return to action this evening when the Captains battle Stevenson at 7 p.m. in Owings Mills, Maryland.
