Christopher Newport enters the contest with an 8-8 record, including a 2-3 mark against conference foes. St. Mary's (Md.) is 7-7 overall and 1-2 in league action.

CNU is coming off of an exciting 21-8 victory against Frostburg State on Saturday. During that contest,
Sarah Culver led the way with five goals, including the 200th of her career. With that performance, she became just the third Captain to reach that benchmark.
Kaitlyn Ready also earned the win and made three saves. Her final stop marked the 500th of her career, making her the first player in program history to reach that milestone.
Along with Ready's efforts, Christopher Newport was effective on the defensive side throughout the battle with FSU. The team held Frostburg State to a microscopic 50 percent success rate on clears during the game. That equaled the lowest percentage by a CNU opponent since the 2016 campaign. On an individual level,
Julia Golden and
Sam Wettengel both forced turnovers on clear attempts and quickly flipped them into fast-break goals, while
Joely Stevens and
Madison Chestnut cut off late runs in the second half to help cap off a 60-minute suffocation.
Overall this season, Wettengel ranks second in the CAC with 35 caused turnovers, while Golden is third with 28. Equally effective causing havoc on the field,
Victoria Betterly has 25 caused turnovers, which stands as a new freshman record at CNU. On the offensive side, Culver ranks second in the Capital with 50 goals, and
Cat Leighty is fifth with 27 assists.
On the other side of the field, St. Mary's (Md.) has dropped its last three decisions, including back-to-back losses against No. 8 York (Pa.) and No. 7 Mary Washington. The Seahawks have received big contributions from freshman Stephanie Heffron. The first-year standout ranks among the top newcomers in the league with 25 caused turnovers, 38 ground balls, and 55 draw controls.
Among the veterans on the roster, Kate Bartholomew ranks fourth in the CAC with 41 goals and fifth with 54 points. Meanwhile, Emma Brown has been equally effective between the pipes. The senior sits second among conference performers with 140 saves while compiling a .456 save percentage and a 12.94 goals-against-average.
In 15 previous meetings between the programs, Christopher Newport holds an 8-7 edge in the series. The Captains have won the last three meetings, including a pair of triumphs last year. Of the past seven battles, four have been decided by one goal. Of the three games decided by more than one,
Lisa Valentine has been on the victorious side each time. She posted an 18-14 win as the SMC head coach in 2015 before adding an 11-5 victory at CNU in 2016 and a 19-16 triumph in last year's conference playoffs.
