BUENA VISTA, Va. -- The Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will continue Capital Athletic Conference action on Tuesday at 4 p.m. when the Captains travel to Southern Virginia for a league clash at the SVU Fields.
Entering the game, the Captains are 6-6 overall and 0-1 in league tilts. Southern Virginia is 7-3 with an identical 0-1 mark against conference foes.
CNU is coming off of a 21-8 setback against No. 8 York (Pa.) on Saturday. During that contest,
Julia Golden registered her third hat-trick of the season, while
Sam Wettengel matched her career-high with five caused turnovers. That also equaled the eighth-highest single-game total in program history.
Along with Wettengel and Golden, several other veterans stepped up on Saturday. Senior
Sarah Culver connected on a pair of goals against the Spartans, while fellow classmate
Anna Bowers earned her first start and rewarded the squad with an assist in the second half. Meanwhile, junior goalie
Kaitlyn Ready came through with her ninth double-digit save effort of the season with 10 stops against York.
Ready, who leads the CAC with 140 stops this season, sits just four saves shy of breaking Christopher Newport's career record. The third-year standout has 469 stops during her tenure, which is just short of Gayle Robinson's record of 472 set from 2007-10.
Overall, Ready's 469 saves also place her 14th among active goalies in the NCAA. Meanwhile, Culver is 10th among active players with 187 career goals. She is just 13 shy of becoming the third player in CNU history to reach the prestigious 200-goal plateau.
On the other side of the field, Southern Virginia fell at St. Mary's (Md.), 19-4, during its last outing on Friday. Despite the setback, the Knights still lead the CAC with a 15.00 goals-per-game average. SVU also ranks 12th in the NCAA with a rate of 28.10 ground balls per contest. Six of the squad's seven wins this season have come by double-digits, including a 17-0 blanking of Montreat on March 1.
On an individual level, Megan Barfuss ranks third in the CAC with 28 assists and sits seventh with 43 total points. Meanwhile, Caitriona Knowles leads the squad and stands sixth in the league with 31 goals. Defensively, Jordan Gunderson boasts a conference-best 27 caused turnovers and 49 ground balls.
The Knights and Captains have previously met five times with Christopher Newport holding a 5-0 edge in the series. CNU won last year's battle, 20-2, in Newport News.
