REDLANDS, Calif. -- Ending their trip to the Golden State on a high note, the 23rd-ranked Christopher Newport women's tennis team secured a 5-4 win over No. 30 Redlands on Friday afternoon.
Johanna Ranta-aho and
Kara Ferner each earned wins in both singles and doubles to lead the way for the Captains in the narrow victory.
In doubles play, the Captains earned a crucial sweep of the three bouts in tandem action as the match would come down to the final point. CNU got an 8-7 win at No. 1, an 8-5 win at No. 2, and an 8-3 win on the third line. Ranta-aho and
Olivia Reed paired up for the win on the top line, defeating Elizabeth Johnson and Halle Martinucci. At No. 2,
Colette Gilbert and
Amanda Yermal earned the 8-5 victory against Karen Kobayashi and Mia Fitzgerald. Finally,
Reagan Delp and Ferner combined to defeat Kate Dolan and Jackie Lacy at No. 3.
With a 3-0 lead in hand, the Captains took a 4-1 advantage when Ranta-aho secured the straight set victory at No. 1 over Fitzgerald. Redlands would pull back within two points with the win at No. 4, but Ferner clinched the match next with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Lacy.
Yermal won her first set in singles play but Kobayashi rallied to come back for the win.
Ana Clara Borga also earned a set victory in her match, but fell to Dolan 6-1, 3-6, 6-4.
The Captains will return to the East Coast with an overall record of 3-4. CNU will host Methodist University on March 15 at 5:00 pm followed by an 11:00 am Sunday matchup with Centre College.
