REDLANDS, Calif. -- Junior
Dominic Lacombe had a big day for the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport men's tennis team, winning at both singles and doubles, but the Captains were nipped by the University of Redlands on Friday afternoon, 5-4.
Lacombe helped CNU take a 2-1 lead after doubles with a No. 3 victory with partner
James Baron, slipping past Chase Lipscomb and Andrew Leahy, 8-7. Then, against Lipscomb on the top line of singles action, Lacombe snuck out a first-set win, 7-6, before pulling away for a 6-4 win in the second set.
Rookie
Ryan Macy also won in singles action for the Captains, but Redlands captured four points during individual play for the win. Macy dropped Brad Cummins, 6-3, 7-6, at No. 3 singles.
The last CNU point came from No. 2 doubles where senior tandem
Nicholas Ruzicka and
William Trang picked up an 8-2 win over Thomas Reznik and Andrew Yip. The match also came down to Trang in singles, where he led 4-1 and again 5-2 in the third set tiebreker, but Reznik rallied for a 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 win at No. 4.
The Captains will return to Newport News after concluding their annual spring break road trip to California. Now 3-5 on the season after the setback, CNU men's tennis will host their next three matches starting with Centre College on March 16 at 11:00 am.
