RALEIGH, N.C. - Christopher Newport's softball squad completed its two-day, four-game journey to North Carolina Thursday by taking two games from the Avenging Angels of Meredith College. CNU is now 7-1 to start the season as
Keith Parr's team won the opener, 13-4, before claiming the nightcap, 3-0. The Captains have now won seven straight since dropping their season opener to Emory & Henry.
Christopher Newport jumped to a big lead early in the opener, scoring six times in the second inning, and later added six more runs in the sixth. The game was stopped after six frames due to the eight-run rule. The Captains recorded 14 hits off Meredith pitching, including five extra-base knocks.
Freshman catcher
Bailey Roberts got the scoring started with a second inning solo home run for CNU. Sophomore shortstop
Natalie Carmichael drove in three runs in the game on two singles. Junior
Grace Wild recorded three hits including a single, double, and tripe. Sophomore
Patty Maye Ohanian posted three singles and knocked in a pair of runs.
Sophomore
Emily Weatherholtz was the beneficiary of the run production, and improved to 3-0 on the season. Weatherholtz pitched all six innings, striking out six while allowing four runs on seven hits.
In the second game, junior
Aubrey Bates threw shutout ball over the first six innings for the victory. Bates allowed just two hits and struck out six to improve to 3-1 on the year. Junior
Trish Webb finished up by hurling a scoreless seventh for her first save of the season.
CNU plated two in the top of the first inning to jump to an early lead, giving Bates and Webb all the production they would need. All three runs came thanks to the long ball, as Ohanian smacked a two-run shot in the top of the first, and Roberts clubbed her second of the day, a solo shot in the fourth inning. Meredith dropped to 0-6 with the losses.
Christopher Newport Head Coach
Keith Parr announced before the games that this Saturday's scheduled doubleheader at Piedmont in Demorest, Ga., has been canceled due to poor field conditions.
The Captains are scheduled to host Lynchburg next Thursday, March 14th. And additions to the schedule will be posted here on CNUsports.com.
