ORANGE, Calif. -- In the first two matches of the team's annual spring break trip to California, the 24th-ranked Christopher Newport women's tennis team suffered a 6-3 loss at Caltech before picking up a 5-4 win at Chapman University.
The Caltech match was played on Sunday with the Beavers picking up their third straight win over a nationally-ranked opponent to improve to 3-3 on the season. CNU then bounced back on Monday with a close win at Chapman University as the Panthers fell to 0-2 on the year.
With the split, Christopher Newport is now 2-4 overall.
Against Caltech, the Captains got a win at No. 3 doubles when
Ana Clara Borga and
Reagan Delp combined for an 8-1 victory over Michelle Hyun and Jennifer Yu. In singles play, CNU secured wins at No. 1 and 3, with
Johanna Ranta-aho picking up a win over Kana Moriyama (6-4, 6-4) and
Kara Ferner capturing a victory against Hyun (5-2, ret.).
In the win at Chapman, the Captains picked up a pair of crucial wins in doubles play before splitting the singles points with the Panthers. Ferner and Ranta-aho paired for an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles while
Amanda Yermal and
Colette Gilbert earned an 8-3 victory at No. 2.
In singles, Chapman clawed back into the match with three wins, but Ferner, Yermal, and Delp each won in straight sets to secure the team win for the Captains. Ferner dropped Madison Ross at No. 2 (6-2, 6-4), Yermal downed Vasilia Trofimova (6-2, 6-2) at No. 3, and Delp defeated Delara Fotovatjah at No. 4 (6-3, 6-1).
Christopher Newport will return to action on Friday, March 8 at the University of Redlands for a 2:00 pm match before returning home to Newport News.
