No. 35 Men's Tennis Bounces Back With 9-0 Win Over St. Mary's College of Maryland

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- On a rain-soaked Sunday in March, the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport men's tennis team was forced to move Senior Day festivities indoors, but the change in venue would not spoil the final home conference match of the regular season as the Captains ran away with a 9-0 win over St. Mary's College of Maryland. Bouncing back after their first loss in over three weeks, the Captains improved to 8-6 overall, 3-1 in league action with the shutout in Capital Athletic Conference play.

CNU cruised to a 3-0 lead after doubles with quick wins across the board. The Captains top tandem, Andy Mason and Ryan Macy, paired up for an 8-1 win over Jon Gorel and Ethan Garren. Then, at No. 2, seniors Nicholas Ruzicka and William Trang won by the same score against Ron Stith and Samuel Sheats. Rounding out the doubles sweep was James Baron and Dominic Lacombe, with an 8-0 win at No. 3 versus Jack Brandenburg and Jacob Bartholow.

The Captains continued their dominant play into singles action, as the team combined for just 12 games lost in the six matches. Mitch Brody didn't surrender a single game at No. 6, defeating Bartholow by a final score of 6-0, 6-0. Mason gave up just one in a straight set win at No. 1, downing Gorel, 6-0, 6-1.

Down the line, not one CNU player gave up more than three games in their individual matches. Macy defeated Ethan Garren (6-0, 6-3) at No. 2; Ruzicka notched a win over Ron Stith (6-1, 6-2) at No. 3; rookie Mason Kolls secured a win over Sheats (6-2, 6-0); and Baron won his second match of the day over Brandenburg (6-1, 6-2).

With the loss, St. Mary's falls to 3-10 overall, 1-3 in CAC action. The Captains will hit the road for the next four bouts heading into the conference tournament, before capping home action against Washington & Lee on April 28. CNU will next take on Southern Virginia University on the road April 5 at 3:30 pm.
