NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will cap off its three-game homestand on Saturday at 2 p.m. when CNU takes on No. 8 York (Pa.) in a Capital Athletic Conference clash at Captains Field.
Entering the game, Christopher Newport sits at 6-5 on the season, including 4-3 at home. York is 5-4 with a 3-2 mark on the road. Saturday's game will be the first CAC tilt for both teams this season.
For those fans unable to attend the game, live stats and a video stream of the action will be available at CNUsports.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the CNU schedule page.
The Captains are coming off of a 15-8 victory over Lynchburg on Wednesday. During that battle,
Zoe Dyer and
Cat Leighty combined for eight goals, while
Julia Golden snatched a career-high eight draw controls. With that performance, she became just the 10th player in program history to eclipse 100 career draws.
Along with the leading scorers against the Hornets,
Alexis Kasuda continued her run on the offensive side. The freshman posted a pair of points against Lynchburg and now has four goals and two assists in her last three appearances. She also earned the start against the Hornets, becoming the sixth different freshman to start at least one game this season. That marks the most freshman starters since the 2015 squad ran out seven during the season.
Among the other first-year standouts in the lineup,
Victoria Betterly already has 18 caused turnovers, which stands as the second-highest total by a freshman in program history.
Kendall Krause has also caused 13 miscues, including four in her last two appearances. Meanwhile, Dyer has at least one point in 10 of her 11 outings this season, including three hat-tricks.
On the other side of the field, York comes into the weekend on a three-game skid. However, the three losses have come against No. 1 Gettysburg, No. 2 Washington & Lee, and No. 5 Middlebury. In fact, the squad's only other loss this year came in an overtime setback at No. 6 Franklin & Marshall.
Despite facing a challenging slate, Meghan Fox is currently tied for second in the conference with 33 goals, while Devin Hursey is fifth in the league with 17 assists, including six in her last two appearances. The defense is equally effective and features two-time first-team All-American Nicole Clauter. The senior star has 76 career caused turnovers, which places her fourth on York's all-time charts. Coincidentally, she is chasing the record established by current CNU assistant coach and former Spartan legend
Katie Vautier, who set the standard with 116 caused turnovers from 2010-13.
So far this year, Clauter ranks ninth in the CAC with 14 caused turnovers while standing fifth with 29 ground balls. Between the pipes, Abby Smith has a .467 save percentage and a 9.24 goals-against-average in her nine starts.
In seven previous meetings between the two programs, York holds a 7-0 record. The Spartans won last year's battle, 21-12, in Pennsylvania. During that contest,
Kaitlyn Ready established her career-high with 20 saves, while
Sarah Culver notched a hat-trick. On the other side, Meghan Fox posted five points for York.
